Windpowered Art

At Meininger‘s yesterday, looking for some sort of art paper for work. Looking and looking, I came across the Strathmore Windpower area. Lots of sketchbooks and the like. 100% windpower, 30% post-consumer fiber, acid free. What more do you need? I hadn’t seen that before. I’m certainly going to search out windpower-manufactured products in the future.

A little searching shows it was written up in Treehugger a few months ago.

Ricky Gervais in new Christopher Guest movie

Here’s a trailer. Look for all the same people from previous mockumentaries, too. (via Kottke)

Last day of work

5 hours left. Including an hour of lunch. That’s all I’ve got left at my current job. What have I been up to this morning? Well, I took care of some of the things that I needed to – i.e., emailing an ad to a former newspaper employer (actually, that part is ironic that on my last day, I sent an ad to the place I worked before here), cleaned up the desktop, picked necessary samples (including some 2005 US Open posters – radical!), and rebuilt my SimCity Classic city.

I love SimCity Classic. Like more than a friend, at times. Working in OS 9 for the last 2 years, I’ve been playing old school games that only work in pre-X environments. SimCity Classic is one of them. Over the last year, I built your standard SimCity. It got up to about 425,000 inhabitants. Their main gripe was with pollution and no amount of parks will eliminate the pollution. It’s a necessary evil (in the SimCity world). Commerce is basically useless and (as far as I know) there’s no way to convert the city to run on a big commercial model (to wean the city off the heavy-Industrial model).

Anyway, I showed Mccarty the city and he proceeded to wreck it, via a devastating series of earthquakes and subsequent fires. I only had 1 Fire Station, because I play with disasters turned off (I did, however, have 55 police stations and crime was basically nonexistant). About 50 years of fires decimated the city, leaving 350 full-time residents.

I decided to rebuild, all in the last day of work.

“Reconstruction: Phase One” was mainly cleanup. I took a bulldozer and bulldozed. A lot. My button clicking hand is a little tired.

“Reconstruction: Phase Two” was the rebuilding stage. I decided to make up for my über-polluting ways of the past 250 years. And I therefore built the city into one huge, well manicured park. Which was also sped me on my way to either Repetitive Stress Disorder or Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

“Reconstruction: Phase Three” was the repopulation stage. I built the cleanest version of power in the game (Nuclear Power Plant), a little bit of power lines and a single Residential property. My city was complete. Total rebuilding time: 62 minutes. If rebuilding New Orleans was only so easy.
